2K Core-Shell Toughened Epoxy Adhesive (Toughened Adhesive ) by Kaneka

Adhesives Formulation

Applicable Base Polymer Properties

Epoxy adhesives are generally more resistant to a wide variety of liquid environments than other structural adhesives. However, they are generally considered to be very rigid systems, and as such they do not have exceptionally good impact or peel resistance unless modified with tougheners. The Kane Ace MX (Kaneka) product line consists of concentrates comprised typically of 25% by weight of core-shell elastomers dispersed in various thermosetting resins. The liquids are easily poured after heating, and the individual core-shell domains remain uniformly dispersed during storage and formulating. Kane Ace MX core-shell particles are compatible with typical cold, warm, and hot curing agents for adhesives, coatings, and composites. Kane Ace MX 120 is a 25% concentrate of core shell rubber in unmodified liquid epoxy resin.

Resulting Properties

The above table presents typical two component epoxy adhesive formulations using core-shell toughening agents. Toughened epoxy adhesives are generally available as single component, elevated temperature curing systems that employ dicyandiamide as the curing agent. Typical cure requirements are one hour at 125°C. Tensile shear strength and temperature resistance of these adhesives are relatively high. Peel strength is also high and does not decrease rapidly with lower temperatures. The durability of modified epoxies is satisfactory as measured by most long term moisture tests.
