Hot melt EVAs are made from a combination of solid thermoplastic copolymers, tackifying resins, and waxes that function with the right viscosity when applied in specific operations. EVA adhesives demonstrate strong adhesive properties, but most importantly they set quickly by virtue of their hot melt character.

Resulting Properties

Starting formulations for an EVA hot melt formulation commonly used for frozen products are given in the table above. This specific adhesive is noted for excellent hot tack, odor, and color. It has good adhesion to a variety of packaging films and can be applied over most wax based carton coatings, providing an excellent seal. Bending the test specimen over a mandrel at -5°C and -15°C provides a good indication of the low temperature flexibility of the hot melt adhesive. Superior flexibility manifests itself by small mandrel diameters. The diameter of the smallest mandrel over which the sample does not break is shown in the table. EVA resins are considered to be relatively safe to use in food applications. Certain adhesive manufacturers offer EVA resins that are approved for indirect food contact (FDA 21 CFR.175) applications.
