Asphalt is flexible, readily adhesive, durable, waterproof, and highly resistant to most acids, alkalines, and salts. However, it can be degraded if improperly used. For example, under the influence of water, excessive temperature, and solar radiation, asphalt can slowly break down to carbon dioxide and water. Asphalt or bitumen materials have had wide application in the adhesives and sealants industry for centuries. Their utility and service life is significantly increased by the use of additives and modifiers, and their application characteristics are made much easier with the development of cold applied formulations.

Resulting Properties

The formulation of Fibrated Asphalt Roof Cement combines the excellent rheological properties of Attagel® 36 asphalt thickener with talc, which serves as a reinforcing filler. Low percentages of polyolefin fibers are added to provide a fibrated appearance and excellent reinforcing properties. These cements meet the performance standards as described in Federal Specification SS-C-153C and ASTM D-2822. A pre-gelling step is included to improve thickening when using a low-speed (7 rpm) Planetary Mixer.

The source of the formulation is Petrie, E.M., “Asphalt Emulsion as Adhesives and Sealants”, SpecialChem.
