Applicable Base Polymer Properties

Metallocene catalysts have been developed to produce polyolefins with precisely tailored properties. The attributes of metallocene catalyzed polyolefin (mPO) in hot melt adhesives are summarized below:

  • Increased mileage due to low density
  • Reduced gel and char formation in tanks, hoses, and nozzles for low maintenance and odor
  • Reduced stringing and spider webbing
  • Improved thermal stability and viscosity
  • Wide service temperature range
  • Good color / clarity
  • Clean machining
  • High adhesion to hard-to-bond substrates
  • Good compatibility with conventional plasticizing and tackifying agents

The major restraints of metallocene catalyzed polyolefin HMAs are (1) the raw material price and (2) formulations are somewhat more difficult to process than conventional hot melts.

Resulting Properties

Metallocene catalysts offer unique advantages versus conventional catalysts. They allow producing consistent, controllable molecular structures that can be designed to:

  • Improve toughness and impact resistance
  • Provide low off-taste and odor
  • Allow tailoring of processing characteristics to fit the conversion process
  • Eliminate non-targeted molecular weight species in resins
  • Offer a greater control of molecular weight distribution (MWD)

This formulation -"Metallocene Catalyzed Polyolefin HMA for Plastic Bonding by Clariant" will produce a water-white HMA with good adhesion to hard to bond plastic substrates such as PP, PS, PET, PC, PMMA, etc.; wood; aluminum; and various other metals. The adhesive has good resistance to many chemicals and oils.
