Solvent Borne Vulcanizable Natural Rubber Adhesive

Natural rubber is generally available as a light brown, slightly viscous solvent solution. It has poor elevated temperature resistance without vulcanization. It has good resistance to water and to mold, but poor resistance to oil, solvents, and low temperatures.

Solvent based natural rubber adhesives are based on solutions of the solid rubber in solvents such as toluene, naphtha, and trichloroethane. Generally solvent-based natural rubber adhesives have a solids content of 10-25%.

Resulting Properties

The strength of natural rubber is low relative to other adhesives, and it tends to oxidize and become brittle on aging. Aging properties are fair, although sunlight exposure properties are not too good. Elevated temperatures can cause the polymer to soften unless the adhesive is vulcanized. Natural rubber has good resistance to water and to mold growth but poor resistance to oils, solvents, and oxidizing agents. The adhesive crystallizes at about –34°C and, therefore, is not suitable for low temperature applications.
