Applicable Base Polymer Properties

Ultraviolet light (UV) curing PSA adhesives are creating significant interest for flexible packaging. Acrylate / methacrylate monomers and oligomers as well as photoinitiators are essential components of UV adhesives. Aliphatic urethane acrylates are commonly used in laminations since they have good adhesion to most films and are non-yellowing. These adhesives are also characterized by a relatively low application viscosity.

Resulting Properties

To maximize the shear and temperature resistance of a PSA, the objective is to increase the crosslink density and overall Tg of the adhesive. This is accomplished in this formulation by replacing a tackifying resin with difunctional acrylate. The increased crosslinking and Tg, however, negatively affect the tack properties.
