Evonik Opens New Plant to Provide Adhesive and Sealant Solutions Evonik has opened a new multi-purpose silicone manufacturing facility in Geesthacht, Germany to strengthen its focus on adhesive and sealant solutions. A celebratory inauguration ceremony was held at the site on 10 January 2020 and attended by local dignitaries, including the Mayor of Geesthacht, Evonik’s construction partners and its staff.

Production of Adhesives and Sealants Using Nanotechnology

The new plant is situated outside Hamburg in Northern Germany. The increased production footprint helps Evonik to strengthen its focus on silicone and nanotechnology specialty chemical products, while providing customers with a faster, more reliable supply of the products. The site produces high-quality components and raw materials for the manufacturing of sealants and adhesives, molding and casting compounds, and other products.

The additional capacities serve a range of silicone and nanotechnology products, including:

  • Addition-curing silicone and silyl-terminated polymers which are used as binders for adhesives and sealants in parquet adhesives.
  • Adhesives for wound care and other medical applications or in electronics, such as e-mobility housings or potting materials.

Meeting Market Demands for SMP

A broad range of silyl-terminated polymers (SMP) will be produced to address the increasing market requirements. The new silicone manufacturing facility expands the capacities and allows production flexibility for increased innovation.

Our customers rely on us to innovate and deliver property-enhancing products, for example developing SMP‘s to address the trend for roofing and liquid membranes, or help them to meet the growing demand for strong, but lightweight fiber composite applications in the automotive and aerospace industries,” said Dr. Sabine Giessler-Blank, head of the polymer and construction specialties product line.

Also, a new tank truck filling facility has been completed at the site. By simplifying the delivery and storage process for customers Evonik hopes to also increase efficiency in this process as well.

Standing on the same site as the existing plant, the new tank farm had to be built and commissioned for use while keeping production running smoothly for Evonik’s customers. The plant was completed on time and within the planned budget. The commissioning of the facility’s new tank farm started in December and incremental production increases are planned over the coming months.
