Technip Energies Acquires DSM’s Bio-based Succinic Acid Production TechnologyTechnip Energies announces the acquisition of Biosuccinium® technology from DSM, adding a technological solution to its growing portfolio in sustainable chemicals.

This technology synergizes with recently developed proprietary biopolymer technologies and provides commercially referenced production of bio-based succinic acid (bio-SAc) which serves as a raw material for the production of polybutylene succinate (PBS).

Bio-based Packaging Material for Food Contact Applications

If produced from bio-Sac, PBS is fully biodegradable and is an ideal bio-based and sustainable packaging material for food contact applications. It responds to consumer and government concerns for better materials with lower carbon footprint and environmental impacts.

The acquisition includes a wide range of patent families and proprietary yeast strains, which have been proven at scale in the production facilities of the technology licensees. The Biosuccinium® technology will be the only biobased succinic acid production technology to be sold under license on the market.

Bhaskar Patel, SVP Sustainable Fuels, Chemicals & Circularity at Technip Energies , said, “We are very pleased to acquire this proven technology from DSM. This addition to our growing portfolio of sustainable chemicals will allow Technip Energies to offer a licensed solution for the production of a bio-based, biodegradable polymer, which has a 50% lower carbon footprint than fossil-based production. Superior product properties, combined with best performance in terms of durability, are key attributes in today's consumer market. We will leverage the entire PBS value chain, where we already offer the technology to polymerize bio-based monomers into PBS."
