Epoxy Resins for Adhesives and Sealants

This guide is designed to introduce you to epoxy resins used in adhesives and sealants. Epoxy resin based adhesives are probably the most versatile family of adhesives because they bond well to many substrates. Also, they can be easily modified to achieve widely varying properties. This selection guide will familiarize you with the fundamentals and various types of epoxy resins for adhesives and sealants. This guide will endeavor to direct the formulator through the process of selecting an epoxy resin, or combination of resins of which many are available for a specific adhesive or sealant formulation and end-use requirement.

Epoxy Resin Types

A wide range of epoxy resins are produced and the main types used in adhesive and sealant formulations are shown in Table 1. A more detailed description of different epoxy resin types is included in the coming sections of this guide. The main chemical categories of epoxy resins are glycidyl epoxy and non-glycidyl epoxy.

Glycidyl epoxies are prepared via a condensation reaction of an appropriate dihydroxyl compound, dibasic acid or a diamine and epichlorohydrin. Non-glycidyl epoxies are formed by peroxidation of olefinic double bonds. Glycidyl epoxies can be further classified as glycidyl ether, glycidyl ester, and glycidyl amine. Glycidyl-ether epoxies such as diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A and novolac epoxy resins are the most commonly used epoxies.

There are several epoxy resin types that can be used in adhesive formulations. The most commonly used epoxy resin type is based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA). Epoxy novolac, flexible epoxy, high functionality, and film forming epoxy resins are also used in specialty applications. Check out the table below to know more about various epoxy resins types:
