Asphalt is flexible, readily adhesive, durable, waterproof, and highly resistant to most acids, alkalines, and salts. However, it can be degraded if improperly used. For example, under the influence of water, excessive temperature, and solar radiation, asphalt can slowly break down to carbon dioxide and water. Asphalt or bitumen materials have had wide application in the adhesives and sealants industry for centuries. Their utility and service life is significantly increased by the use of additives and modifiers, and their application characteristics are made much easier with the development of cold applied formulations.

Resulting Properties

Asphalt emulsions are dispersions of very fine bitumen particles in an aqueous medium. These emulsions have a low viscosity and can be applied at ambient temperature, which makes them ideal for use in many construction applications. Asphalt emulsions may be divided into two broad classes: the chemical or soap (e.g., anionic) emulsions and the clay emulsions.
