Hot melt EVAs are made from a combination of solid thermoplastic copolymers, tackifying resins, and waxes that function with the right viscosity. EVA adhesives demonstrate strong adhesive properties, but most importantly they set quickly by virtue of their hot melt character.

Resulting Properties

Bookbinding applicationns are a primary market for hot-melt adhesives which are based predominantly on EVA copolymer resins. A tackified EVA is necessary for bonding substrates that have a relatively low surface energy. A starting formulation for a low cost, general purpose EVA hot melt formulation for bookbinding is given in the table above. This formulation has the following properties:

  • Excellent flexibility
  • Very strong adhesive bonding characteristics
  • Provides the necessary mechanical properties for bookbinding applications
  • Excellent compatibility
  • Elongation greater than 100%
