Applicable Base Polymer Properties

Hot melt EVAs are made from a combination of solid thermoplastic copolymers, tackifying resins, and waxes that function with the right viscosity when applied in the bookbinding operations. EVA adhesives demonstrate strong adhesive properties, but most importantly they set quickly by virtue of their hot melt character.

Advantages
  • Broad formulating latitude necessary for many different applications and adhesion to a wide variety of substrates
  • Quick setting – no cure or fixturing required
  • Retention of properties at low temperatures
  • Relatively low cost
Disadvantages
  • Cold flow (creep)
  • Attacked by some greases, oils, and solvents
  • High viscosity needed for maximum performance

Resulting Properties

Edge veneering and edge banding constitute a primary market for hot-melt adhesives which are based predominantly on EVA copolymer resins. For some applications, however, formulated polyamide hot melts are also used, particularly where exceptional heat resistance of the bond is required. A starting formulation for a low cost, general purpose EVA hot melt formulation for bonding wood veneer is given in the table above.
