Applicable Base Polymer Properties

Styrene block copolymers (SBCs) offer cohesion, strength, and heat resistance for both pressures sensitive adhesives (PSAs) and non-pressure sensitive adhesives. The styrene phase forms a physically crosslinked network in the adhesive at room temperature. Of the SBCs, styrene butadiene styrene has the highest shear strength and moderately good peel strength.

Resulting Properties

Hot melt pressure sensitive adhesives are today finding significant use as removable adhesives. These are primarily styrene block copolymers such as styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) or styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS). SBC based adhesives have a good combination of low cost, adhesion, physical properties, and processing characteristics. The table above provides a starting formulation for a hot melt adhesive that has the cohesive strength so that it can be considered removable.
