Applicable Base Polymer Properties

Meltallocene catalyzed polyethylene such as Affinity GA series of polyolefin elastomers from Dow Chemical has been increasing in use as a base polymer for hot-melt packaging adhesives. Aerafin 180 polymer from Eastman and some grades of Affinity GA elastomer are similar enough in physical properties to allow partial substitution of the m-PE with the Aerafin 180.

Resulting Properties

The formulation presented here shows properties which make them highly desirable to be used in packaging applications. Unlike typical hot melt adhesives, this composition can withstand peel and shear loads at elevated temperatures for extended periods of time without experiencing catastrophic bond failure. The Aerafin 180 substitution provides an attractive balance of cost versus performance.
