Applicable Base Polymer Properties

Acrylic emulsion polymers are ideally suited to the formulation of medium performance sealants. Sealants based on acrylic emulsions provide tough, elastic systems, with high adhesion and durability, and they are very environmentally friendly and easy to use. Encor 167S latex was developed as a binder for high performance sealants. Its excellent exterior durability and adhesion enables the formulator to prepare a broad range of ASTM C834 and C920 compliant sealants.

Resulting Properties

A broad product line with a wide range of properties can be developed by only varying the pigment-to-binder ratio. Typical formulations for flexible acrylic latex sealants are given above. They provide a high solids, rapid drying, paintable, and low cost formulation for gap filling applications. The binder’s low glass transition temperature allows for the formulation of sealants with outstanding low temperature flexibility without the need for external plasticizers. The elimination of external plasticizer has the added benefit of improved dirt pick-up and mildew resistance.
