Applicable Base Polymer Properties
Polyvinyl acetal adhesives generally are formulated from either polyvinyl butyral or polyvinyl formal resins. The polyvinyl butyral is much more soluble and has a lower melt viscosity. It is a more flexible polymer and provides better peel strength. Polyvinyl butyral adhesives are supplied as hot melt adhesives or as solvent solutions of high viscosity and low solids content. These adhesives are water white and transparent, light stable, and have excellent adhesion to glass. Polyvinyl butyral is commonly used in laminating safety glass.
