Applicable Base Polymer Properties

Polyurethanes are extensively and successfully used as adhesives and sealants, and they have an excellent record of durability. Construction sealants based on hybrid polyurethane and silicone polymers, such as silyl terminated polyurethane (SPUR), have better weathering characteristics than conventional polyurethane sealants, but without the odor and unpaintability problems of conventional silicone sealants. They also provide better adhesion, abrasion resistance and low temperature extrudability than silicone sealants. The silyl terminated sealant systems are also isocyanate- and solvent-free systems.

Resulting Properties

The table above provides two generic formulations and the resulting physical properties of SPUR based sealants with different silane adhesion promoters. The properties are measured after curing for two weeks at 23°C and 50% RH and then tested according to ISO 37 or ASTM D412 respectively for tensile strength and elongation, and ISO 868 or ASTM C661 for hardness. Adhesion is tested according to ISO 8510-2 (dry adhesion) followed by water immersion for four days and one day at room temperature according to ISO 10591 (wet adhesion).
