Resulting Properties
The viscosity of this adhesive and its fast setting capability provide an excellent adhesive for sealing of solid fiber laminates. This adhesive formulation will make paper bonds that will tear 100% fiber after 24 hrs immersion in room temperature water. This adhesive also has good wet tack properties.
Waterborne PVOH adhesives have good flexibility, low-temperature properties and adhesion to coated papers. PVOH adhesives are very resistant to oil, grease, and solvents while maintaining high tensile strength and flexibility. PVOH adhesives are also notable for their low degree of permeability. These adhesives provide a low to medium performance relatively inexpensive adhesive that dries quickly.
In food packaging, polyvinyl alcohol adhesives are FDA approved as an adhesive for indirect food contact. PVOHs are tasteless, odorless and can be used on their own or blended with polyvinyl acetate emulsions for a faster set.
