3M Board of Directors Elects Vance D. Coffman to Serve as Lead Director

ST. PAUL, Minn -- 3M Company announced that Vance D. Coffman, a member of the company's Board of Directors since 2002, has been elected as lead director, effective immediately.

In this newly created role, Mr. Coffman will lead executive sessions of 3M's independent directors and will facilitate information flow and communication between the directors and the chairman, in addition to other duties specified by the board.

"With the establishment of a lead director -- especially one as qualified and capable as Vance Coffman -- we are further enhancing 3M's excellent governance practices and reputation," said George W. Buckley, 3M chairman of the board, president and CEO.

Mr. Coffman served as chairman of the board and chief executive officer, Lockheed Martin Corp. He retired as chief executive officer in 2004 and as chairman of the board in 2005.
