3M Introduces Fire Block Sealant for Residential and Combustible Construction

Published on 2004-06-25. Author : SpecialChem

3M's commitment to designing technologically driven, fire protection products to help prevent the spread of fire, smoke and noxious gases has just gotten stronger. 3M, the number-one preferred brand among fire-stop professionals, is introducing 3M fire block sealant FB 136 that meets fire-blocking codes required by the 2003 International Family of Building Codes. This 3M fire block sealant is designed for use by both professionals and do-it-yourselfers. Now the average homeowner has access to the same professional-grade products designed for professionals, and residential contractors have a new fire block sealant to add to the current line of fire protection products by 3M.

3M fire block sealant FB 136 is a non-rated sealant for single-family residential and combustible construction. Properly installed and cured, 3M fire block FB 136 forms a solid, permanent, non-combustible barrier that helps prevent the spread of fire, smoke and noxious gases. In addition, it resists high temperatures and seals interior construction voids around wires, pipes, HVAC ducts and vents, in wood or steel framed construction, as required by The International Family of Building Codes. It may also be used around chimney, fireplace and framing gaps.

"We're committed to finding ways to make buildings safer. We're known for our innovations in fire protection products among the professional fire-stop contractors, and now we're bringing those products to average homeowners who are building or renovating their homes," said Dana Decker, marketing manager, 3M fire protection products. "3M fire block sealant FB 136 meets the current code requirements for fire-locking and is easy for residential contractors and homeowners to use."

3M fire block sealant FB 136 can easily be installed with a standard caulking gun, pneumatic pumping equipment, or it can be easily applied with a putty knife or trowel. It features superior bonding strength, has a high caulk rate and is a halogen-free formula. 3M fire block sealant FB 136 will bond to concrete, brick, metal, wood, plastic and cable jacketing. It is easy to clean up with water and does not require special handling or disposal. 3M fire block sealant FB 136 will not sag, run or drip in vertical or overhead applications, and is tack free in approximately 15 minutes.

3M fire block sealant FB 136 meets ASTM E 136, current 2003 International Building Code, 2003 International Residential Code, 2003 International Residential Mechanical Code, 2003 International Fuel Gas Code and NFPA 5000 draft, smoke and fire blocking requirements.

3M fire block sealant FB 136 is available through authorized distributors of 3M fire protection products.
