Akzo Nobel ups Expancel capacity

Published on 2003-09-22. Author : SpecialChem

Akzo Nobel is increasing the capacity for Expancel expandable microspheres at its industrial products plant in Stockviksverken, Sweden.

The project, for which the Dutch group has not disclosed further details, will create a number of job openings.

Expancel microspheres are small, spherical plastic particles consisting of a polymer shell encapsulating a gas. When the gas inside the shell is heated, it increases in pressure and the thermoplastic shell softens. This results in a dramatic increase in the volume of the microspheres.

The product is used in number of industries including printing inks, paint additives and paper and board production. Most recently it was used in the packaging of the fragrance Glo, launched by superstar Jennifer Lopez.

"This investment represents a further strengthening of Expancel';s market position," said Lars Erik Thomsgard, general manager of Akzo Nobel Industrial Products, which trades under the Casco Products name.
