Arkema Successfully Completes First REACH Phase of Registration

Published on 2010-12-03. Author : SpecialChem

Arkema, through its highly dedicated teams, has registered 140 substances on time with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). The given deadline, marking the registration of substances produced or imported in annual quantities of 1,000 metric tons or more as well as those designated as substances of very high concern (SVHC), represented a major step for Arkema, as this involved 140 substances, namely one third of its 430 substances covered by the REACH regulation.

The Group, which has backed this regulation from the outset, put in place a team of some 30 people - toxicologists, ecotoxicologists, and regulatory managers within the Safety Environment Products Division and the Business Units - in order to complete this phase successfully.

This phase has required producers coming together within consortia in order to facilitate registration procedures. Arkema, based on its major status in a number of key chemical sectors, acted as "lead registrant " in over 60 dossiers.

"This initial registration phase has been an opportunity for Arkema to put in place an extensive communication and exchange process with both suppliers and customers, in particular by taking full account of the uses they make of our products. Much more than a regulation, REACH helps improve comprehensive, systematic and in-depth knowledge of all our products. This approach, which entails manufacturers evaluating and controlling potential risks posed by chemicals throughout their lifecycle, will help restore the confidence of end-users", states Jean Morch, Vice President Safety and Environment.
