BASF expands capacity for medium-molecular polyisobutenes

Published on 2002-11-25. Author : SpecialChem

BASF has increased its medium molecular weight polyisobutene production capacity by 10,000 tons per annum in its Ludwigshafen plant. The production increase has been made possible by constructing a new plant section during the third quarter of this year.

The commissioning of the new section brings BASF's production capacity for medium molecular weight polyisobutenes to 16,000 tons per year.

These materials are produced using BASF developed technology which has already been proven in production of low molecular weight highly reactive polyisobutenes at their Antwerp plant.

The production technology utilises a chlorine free process. It allows for the materials molecular weight to be adjusted using selective polymerisation of isobutene in the presence of specialised catalysts.

The Ludwigshafen plant has been designed so that additional production can be added on with minimal capital outlay, enabling production expansion when market demands require.

Medium molecular weight polyisobutenes are commonly used in sealants and adhesives.
