BASF’s Polymer Dispersions Plant Gets TfS Certification

It is becoming increasingly important for globally operating companies to assess sustainability practices within their supply chains. BASF supports its customers in their efforts to promote sustainability along their entire supply chain by carrying out audits based on the “Together for Sustainability” (TfS) process in addition to its own internal audits. Recently, the dispersions production site in Cengkareng, Indonesia, was successfully audited as part of the TfS initiative. Independent inspectors from SGS, one of the world's leading companies in the fields of inspection, testing, verification and certification, verified the sustainability performance of the site against a pre-defined set of criteria.

Among other aspects, the inspectors assessed the handling and disposal of chemicals and wastewater treatment at the Cengkareng site. The safety plan designed to protect BASF staff, contractors and neighbors, plant and occupational safety as well as employment conditions received positive ratings. In Cengkareng, approximately 190 employees produce dispersions for the Asian market. These are used for architectural coatings, construction chemicals, fiber bonding, adhesives and paper coatings.

Through independent audits such as that on our dispersions site in Cengkareng, we are demonstrating how we are implementing our high standards at a global level and, in this way, reconciling economic success with social and environmental responsibility,” said Christoph Hansen, Senior Vice President of the Regional Business Unit Dispersions & Resins Europe.

Global standardization of assessments and supplier audits

In order to assess their suppliers, customers need criteria that are globally uniform, verifiable, and not specific to any company. In 2011, companies of the chemical industry, including BASF, founded the “Together for Sustainability” initiative to standardize assessments and audits of suppliers to the chemicals industry at a global level. The certifications help to control and optimize sustainability along the entire supply chain.
