Cargill, Kansas research center to develop soy-based urethane

Scientists at Cargill Inc. have joined hands with researchers from the Kansas Polymer Research Center, Pittsburg State University, Kansas. in an effort to develop new soy-based materials based on renewable sources for the urethane industry.

The U.S. Department of Energy has agreed to provide partial funds to the program in order to encourage technology development.

This alliance is part of a larger Cargill initiative to accelerate development of industrial products from renewable resources and try to leverage the company's expertise in food and agriculture to create new industrial products. Cargill is also looking to form alliances to bring those products to market.

Polyurethane is used to make a number of materials, including foam, plastic, fiber, adhesives and sealants for applications in furnishings, construction and transportation.
