Two North American companies which include Darex, a division of W.R. Grace, the world's leading supplier of sealants and coatings for cans and closures to the packaged food and beverage industry, and H.B. Fuller Company, a worldwide manufacturer and marketer of specialty chemicals, announced the formation of a joint marketing and distribution alliance. The terms of the agreement are that, H.B. Fuller will sell Darex's Daran® PVdC (polyvinylidene chloride) latex for flexible packaging in conjunction with its HYDROFLEX® family of waterborne adhesives for drybond and wetbond laminations. The alliance is to be effective immediately.

The Daran PVdC latex coatings act as a barrier to the transmission of oxygen, moisture, aroma, grease and other materials for packaging applications which as a result leads to the protection food, consumer and industrial products. It is in fact used extensively in multilayer packaging applications. Daran PVdC latexes are manufactured to meet FDA regulations for coating paper and paperboard and a wide range of plastic substrates for direct and indirect food contact applications.

Mani Subramanian, Global Marketing Manager, Darex said that "The alliance between Darex and H.B. Fuller provides a complete solution for building a flexible packaging offering and eliminates the need to buy products from two separate manufacturers. This one-stop-shop eases the way for quicker time to market, streamlines accounting processes and leverages industry-leading technology solutions".

Building up on the same lines, Mark Mooney, Strategic Accounts Manager for North America Adhesives, H.B. Fuller Company, said that "The Daran product line is a perfect fit with our HYDROFLEX offerings. This is very exciting. For years we have been unable to fill our customer requests for a better PVdC than was readily available to them. Now because of our alliance with Darex, the flexible packaging converter market in North America will have a high performance alternative from a high performance supplier in H.B. Fuller and Darex. Even before we formally announced the alliance, we have had more questions and requests for trials than we know what to do with."

On the business perspective, H.B. Fuller Company is a worldwide manufacturer and marketer of adhesives, sealants, coatings, paints and other specialty chemical products, with fiscal 2002 sales of $1.256 billion. Common stock is traded on the NYSE under the symbol FUL. And Darex which is Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is a strategic business unit of W.R Grace & Co. (NYSE: GRA - News). Grace is a leading global supplier of catalysts and silica products, specialty construction chemicals, building materials, and sealants and coatings. With annual sales of approximately $1.7 billion, Grace has over 6,000 employees and operations in nearly 40 countries. On the other hand, Darex is a leading supplier of can and closure sealants; coatings to the packaged food and beverage industry; and specialty polymers. For more than 80 years, the company has built a world-class reputation of total customer focus and innovative packaging solutions. Darex also operates worldwide in over 40 countries.
