Dimeric TDI for water-borne polyurethane dispersions with improved physical properties

Published on 2009-04-15. Author : SpecialChem

Solid dimeric toluene diisocyanate is a versatile additive for PU coatings, adhesives and sealants. Aqueous polyurethane adhesive dispersions have established themselves in the past in various application fields. The use of water-borne coatings and adhesives is continually on the rise, and not only due to VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) and environmental concerns. The increasing price of crude oil and its effect on organic chemical costs remains a factor in their increased market penetration.

Environmentally friendly coatings and adhesive systems contain reduced amounts of organic compounds. While coating and adhesive dispersions applied without additional isocyanate provide good mechanical properties, crosslinking with special isocyanates can significantly improve physical properties such as tensile strength and adhesion, at the same time increasing tensile modulus and heat distortion temperature.

In water-borne adhesive dispersions, Rhein Chemie has demonstrated the advantages of using solid, dimeric TDI to formulate storage-stable, one-component systems with improved physical properties.
