The Dow Chemical Company's (NYSE: Dow) Adhesives & Functional Materials business introduced at the K 2013 fair in Düsseldorf, Germany, its HYPOD™ Polyolefin Dispersions, a distinctive solution allowing converters and brand owners to create new packaging designs by combining the outstanding performance of polyolefins with the benefits of water-based systems.

"HYPOD™ Polyolefin Dispersions offer the opportunity to create totally new packaging applications and markets enabling significant innovation in coating, adhesives and sealants on conventional water-based processing technology," said Margherita Fontana, senior marketing manager EMEA, Dow Adhesives & Functional Materials. "As a global leader in dispersions and polyolefins, Dow has the application know-how to deliver custom-built solutions and the differentiated advantages of water-based polyolefins to flexible packaging applications."

HYPOD™ Polyolefin Dispersions offer converters and brand owners to create structures for customized packaging application needs including paper and paperboard, food packaging and specialty packaging for various applications such as sandwich wrappers, pet food bags, pizza boxes, confectionary, and yogurt lid stock.

Converters will particularly appreciate the good adhesion offered by HYPOD™ to polyolefin substrates and between paper, foil and film layers, as well as its heat sealability to various polar and non-polar substrates. Its resistance to oil and grease and the excellent water and moisture barrier of HYPOD™ delivers leakage free and waterproof packaging for safe and shelf-attractive packages. "

HYPOD™ Polyolefin Dispersions also helps address important packaging sustainability requirements," said Marco Amici, Technical Service and Development Engineer, Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics. "Because HYPOD™ is water based, it offers the opportunity to reduce organic solvents emissions compared to existing solvent-based coatings, and the high solids in HYPOD™ allow for fast and energy efficient drying. Its versatility makes it very well suited to create tailor made solutions, to match and exceed performance requirements at low coating weights."

Enabled by Dow's patented BLUEWAVE™ Technology, the unique properties of HYPOD™ Polyolefin Dispersions make them highly customizable, allowing the development of additional functionalities that can be tailored as necessary for specific customer needs and targeted applications in compliance with today's stringent food contact requirements.

Dow Performance Packaging is one of the world's largest flexible and rigid plastic packaging franchises for the food and beverage market, as well as industrial and consumer packaging sectors.
