Published on 2015-11-13. Author : SpecialChem

The global medical device market will grow by 4.4 percent per annum with a projected value of $440 billion by 2018, according to some analysts. To help OEMs, fabricators and designers compete in this fast growing and diverse market, Dow Corning is showcasing at COMPAMED 2015 (Hall 8a, Booth M27) an expanded portfolio of innovative silicone elastomers including new additions to two already well known product families. They are offering Shore A hardness’s of 40, 50, and 70 in each family: Silastic® Q7-78XX BioMedical Grade Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) and Dow Corning® C6-7XX LSR. The expanded portfolio also encompasses the recently launched Dow Corning® QP1-2XX LSR product line. All of these advanced elastomers expand Dow Corning’s existing portfolio to offer customers broad new design freedoms when developing new healthcare applications. Dow Corning expert, Pennadam Sivanand, will underscore the versatility of the company’s silicone technology in a presentation during COMPAMED’s Supplier Forum.

"The World Trade Organization numbers the different types of medical devices at 1.5 million, ranging from large diagnostic imaging equipment to small disposable items like vials and syringes," said Gary Lord, global strategic marketing director for Healthcare at Dow Corning. "It takes the extended market expertise and proactive customer collaboration of an innovative industry leader like Dow Corning to help customers achieve their optimal balance of performance, processability and regulatory compliance – all at a competitive price point."

Dow Corning customers develop an incredibly diverse range of devices for healthcare, ranging from short- and long-term implants to high-throughput molding applications enabling complex device designs that integrate intricate parts. The company’s versatile new portfolio of innovative solutions combines products from its biomedical-grade, high-consistency rubber and liquid silicone elastomer families. All of these new solutions in the expanded offering share a uniform chemistry optimized at the molecular level. This helps to ensure customers can expect highly reproducible processing and performance across their medical device designs. The company manufactures all of these new products in their portfolio under strict change and process control systems to ensure high-quality and consistent end product which should equate to reduced downtime, scrap and, ultimately, customer manufacturing costs.

Dow Corning expert, Pennadam Sivanand, will detail the technology underlying the company’s healthcare-grade liquid silicone elastomer line in his paper, which is titled "Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) Materials for Medical Applications in a Fast-Growing Global Healthcare Industry." Sivanand’s presentation is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 19, from 11:00-11:30 a.m. in Hall B, Booth G40. An application engineer for Dow Corning’s Healthcare Solutions, Sivanand will discuss the role of chemistry vs. application as the company’s Dow Corning® QP1-2XX Series of LSRs have evolved to balance processing and application and regulatory requirements.

Dow Corning is also showcasing at COMPAMED 2015 its broad range of materials solutions for Healthcare, including its expanding range of Pressure Sensitive Adhesives (PSAs) that target a wide variety of applications, such as medical device attachments and wearable technology.
