Dow Corning plans to expand cost-effective solutions in China

Following the receipt of government certificate to manufacture silicone structural sealant in China, the first ever awarded to a foreign concern by the Chinese government, Dow Corning announced its plan to roll out the new cost-effective solutions to local customers. Local manufacture is a crucial component in Dow Corning’s strategy to offer more comprehensive and cost-effective options to customers in the construction industry.

The manufacture certificate was formally approved and awarded to Dow Corning by the Chinese Building Metal Structure Association (CBMSA). The certificate allows Dow Corning to manufacture silicone structural glazing sealant in its manufacturing facilities in Songjiang, near Shanghai, China.

"We are very pleased with the support given by the CBMSA to make this happen, and believe this is a strong proof of our partnership with the Chinese government to serve the local needs. The cost advantages of manufacturing our products locally will be transferred to customers, who may otherwise not be able to buy from Dow Corning." WK Ho, Greater China General Manager said. "This is a major milestone in Dow Corning’s corporate calendar in China to realize a purely local solution to benefit our local customers."

The new product line made in Songjiang will be offered in parallel with Dow Corning’s current structural sealant products which are imported from the company’s global supply chain outside of China. Local manufacturing helps drive down product cost to meet the very different needs of local customers. The new products are oxime-based and accredited with the Chinese national GB standard. They are mostly used in external curtain walls in buildings.

"Our cost-effective solutions will provide a distinct competitive advantage to our local customers, and help enhance the ultimate benefits to the end users of the local construction industry." Ricky Neoh, Greater China Commercial Director for Construction said.

"Customers of our current structural sealants are primarily either international companies, or companies which operate in compliance with overseas practice. Our imported products are accredited with international standards such as ASTM, ISO, ETAG to serve the exact customer needs. The choices are with the customers, but we do not anticipate major shift from this group of customers to our new sealant products made in Songjiang." Neoh added.

The new solution is scheduled for launch in the market in 2004.

The new cost-effective solution of construction sealants is one other step Dow Corning makes to respond to the exact needs of customers, and give them more choices. As a solution provider leveraging on silicon-based materials and technology, Dow Corning is committed to customer collaboration to help them succeed in their business. The company celebrates 30 years of services in China since it entered the market through Hong Kong in 1973.

Dow Corning provides performance-enhancing solutions to serve the diverse needs of more than 25,000 customers worldwide. A global leader in silicon-based technology and innovation, offering more than 7,000 products and services, Dow Corning is equally owned by The Dow Chemical Company and Corning, Incorporated. More than half of Dow Corning’s annual sales are outside the United States.
