Dow Corning Wiesbaden Facility to Increase Liquid Silicone Rubber Capacity by up to 50 Percent

Midland, MI -- Dow Corning Corp. has announced that it will increase manufacturing capacity of certain liquid silicone rubbers by up to 50 percent in its Wiesbaden, Germany, plant to meet fast-growing global demand.

"Unprecedented demand for silicon-based products, and for high-consistency rubber and liquid silicone rubber specifically, is being driven by major infrastructure development and product innovation in key industry sectors," said Terry Strange, Dow Corning's Global Supply Chain Manager for Engineered Elastomers. "Dow Corning is addressing this situation by optimizing production wherever possible through supply chain improvements, productivity enhancements and investments in additional manufacturing capacity."

The Wiesbaden increase will be a result of significant new equipment investments. It is the latest in a series of steps Dow Corning has taken to develop significant, additional manufacturing and supply capability for the long-term. Others include:

  • Expanding silicone rubber manufacturing in China by forming Ling Dao Silicone Co., Ltd, with Dow Corning Toray Silicone Co. Ltd.
  • Establishing new storage and distribution facilities in Ulsan, South Korea, with Odfjell, the Norwegian-based global chemical transportation specialist.
  • Building a new plant in Pune, India, which is scheduled for full operation in 2006.
  • Adding capacity in polymers and sealants in Korea.
  • Creating a joint venture with Wacker-Chemie to build a new basic plant in China before the end of the decade, pending government approval. It will manufacture silicone intermediates and fumed silica.
  • Boosting capacity at the company's Barry, Wales, site by 15 percent in 2004, and planning an additional stretch initiative there in 2006

"We are continually assessing and expanding our capability to meet customer needs," Strange said. "The challenge is to keep up with burgeoning demand, which is creating numerous and complex issues for the industry."
