As the next step in its expansion program for manufacturing specialized modified
polymers, DuPont Packaging and Industrial Polymers (P&IP) plans to install new extrusion capacity at
its Shenzhen, China site in 2003.
The expansion project at Shenzhen will include extrusion, feed handling and
process controls for functional grafting and other post- polymerization enhancement of DuPont™
Fusabond®, Bynel® and Appeel® resins. These specialized resins are used for a variety of
applications such as packaging, pipe coating, polymer modification, and in construction markets
that are highly valued by customers due to their unique benefits.
"This investment will expand our modified polymer capacity and increase our market
presence in China to help meet our growing demands in Asia. With this improved capability, we expect
to accelerate new resin development for the local markets as well as better serve our key markets
globally," said Craig Binetti, president of DuPont P&IP. "We are committed to providing industry
leadership in innovation, product design, and application development by continuing to invest globally
in our business," he said.
The first phase of the project is expected to begin in early 2003 with full
manufacturing capability online for Fusabond®, Bynel® and Appeel® resins by year-end 2003.
This expansion project is part of DuPont P&IP's overall growth strategy for China. It will contribute
to a stronger market presence and meet the requirements of supply for the ever-expanding growth in
the Asia Pacific region.
End-uses for DuPont™ Bynel® include multi-layer flexible packaging
applications, requiring inter polymer adhesion between materials in a multi-layer structure.
DuPont P&IP manufactures a range of Bynel® resins which address various inter-material adhesion
challenges.
Use for DuPont™ Fusabond® polymers include strengthening of mixed polymer
streams, such as recycled plastics; multi-layer- coating systems to corrosion-protect oil and gas
pipelines; and interlayer adhesion in building and construction panels.
Designed to be a heat-seal layer in flexible lidding and label structures,
DuPont™ Appeel® lidding sealants can provide peelable seals to CPET, APET, PP, Polystyrene,
PVC and PE containers. Appeel® offers controllable heat-seal strength; peels easily and cleanly;
and seals to a wide variety of lidding substrates.
Packaging & Industrial Polymers business is part of the DuPont Performance
Materials platform with 2001 sales in excess of $4.6 billion. P&IP has manufacturing plants in North
America, Europe and Asia Pacific.
