DuPont to Focus on Elvaloy® Terpolymer at the 5th Eurasphalt and Eurobitume Congress

Published on 2012-05-03. Author : SpecialChem

Geneva -- Sustainable improvements in the performance of asphalt concrete, achievable through the use of DuPont™ Elvaloy® terpolymer, will provide the focus of the DuPont exhibit at the 5th Eurasphalt and Eurobitume Congress to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, 13-15 June 2012. The use of polymer modified asphalt (PMA) containing Elvaloy® can extend the lifetime of a road surface by more than 50 percent when compared to unmodified asphalt, whilst the road's improved resistance to rutting, cracking, fatigue and fuel can result in a reduction in its cost of maintenance by more than 30 percent. Further information on the attributes of Elvaloy® terpolymer, as well as the testing and consulting services available to customers in Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa (ECEMEA), will be provided to visitors of the DuPont booths (17-19) and during a paper to be presented at the congress.

Added in small quantities, Elvaloy® terpolymer contains an active ingredient that chemically reacts with asphalt to form a polymer-linked-asphalt system with improved performance properties. These include enhanced resistance to fatigue and cracking as well as the ability to stretch and contract as temperatures change. Meanwhile, the elastomeric properties of the material provide a more stable and stronger mix, improving shear resistance and therefore the rutting performance of the road surface. Finally, because Elvaloy® reacts chemically with the asphalt, there is no opportunity for separation during transportation to the paving site, or if the asphalt is placed in storage prior to paving, for example during weather. Only once the Elvaloy® is properly mixed into the asphalt does it permanently work as an integral part of the binder.

Regional Paving Innovation Center

Local access to DuPont expertise in road paving processes and products in the ECEMEA region has been provided since April 2009 by the Paving Innovation Center (PIC) in Prague, Czech Republic. More than 10 experts including 5 scientists work there in cooperation with asphalt producers, refineries, road constructors and governmental agencies in the development of value-adding polymer modified bitumen technology. "We have invested in the PIC to provide our customers with the required testing to ensure local compatibility," explains Lukas Bartek, Paving EMEA Market Segment Leader. "The diversity of the ECEMEA region is reflected in the variety of tests according to the different national specifications based on both European and US (SHRP) standards. We are able to provide the testing and consulting services from Prague in an efficient way in our work with customers from Turkey, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, South Africa, Poland and many others."

National Award for Innovation

The PIC in Prague is also a recent recipient of the prestigious Czech Innovation Award (Silver Medal) for the best collaboration between academia and the corporate sector during 2011. The honor recognizes development work between DuPont and the Czech Technical University in the field of new and innovative technical solutions in road construction, including the use of reclaimed plastic waste from packaging and automotive industry (based on ethylene copolymers) in asphalt composites. The application of such composite materials can potentially save between 30 and 100% of bituminous binders and therefore significantly reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.

DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers is a world-class manufacturer of high-performance resins and films for a variety of packaging and industrial applications. Its best known Ethylene Copolymer products include DuPont™ Surlyn® resins for packaging and industrial applications, Bynel® coextrudable adhesives, Selar® PA amorphous polyamide barrier resins, Nucrel® acid copolymers, Elvax® EVA copolymers, Elvaloy®, Elvaloy® AC, Entira™ and Fusabond® modifiers.
