ELASTO to Present Dryflex and Mediprene Adhesion Products at Fakuma 2011

At this year's Fakuma exhibition ELASTO, a leader in the development of custom thermoplastic elastomer compounds, will showcase the latest developments in their Dryflex and Mediprene adhesion products for overmoulding and co-extrusion applications.

It used to be a complex and costly affair producing details made of thermoplastics that showed soft-touch qualities or had integrated seals. With the development of the Dryflex A and Mediprene A series, since the materials are bonded together at the production stage, no separate primer or adhesive is needed. This makes the process faster and more cost-effective. When co-extruding or overmoulding with soft components, the surface of the hard component softens and a diffusion of the molecules in the outer layer takes place.

This stage is critical for the quality of the bonding between the soft and hard material and is called cohesive bonding. Generally the bonding strength depends on the two chosen materials. Dryflex grades can be co-extruded or overmoulded with a wide variety of engineering plastics including PP, PE, PA, ABS, PC, PS, PMMA, ASA, SAN and their blends. Polyamides and ABS may be either reinforced or non-reinforced yet still bond well to Dryflex TPEs.

Dryflex A compounds offer UV, ozone and weather resistance with service temperatures from minus 40 Celsius to 125 Celsius. They are particularly successful in applications where good sealing performance is required, such as food containers or seals on white goods.

The Mediprene A series were developed specifically for medical device applications. They follow ELASTO's stringent Mediprene raw material selection policy; the elastomer is chosen from a series where representative grades have passed USP Class VI, the paraffinic oil is medicinal white oil complying with European Pharmacopeia and the plastic component is a medical grade that has passed USP Class VI.

Mediprene A grades are PVC, silicone and latex free, making them allergen free and a viable alternative to PVC based compounds. They bond well onto, for example, transparent, rigid thermoplastics often used in medical and healthcare applications such as MABS, PC, PETG and SMMA. Medical technical manager at ELASTO, Niklas Ottosson commented "Mediprene adhesion compounds offer many advantages, they allow designers and medical device manufactures to differentiate products while meeting important user and patient demands, including soft-touch cushioning for greater comfort and non-slip surfaces with improved grip for safety".

Applications for Mediprene A compounds include seals, membranes, closures, friction grips and soft-touch handles. They also provide sealing capabilities in fluid environments.

At Fakuma, ELASTO will be co-exhibiting with their German distributor Nordmann Rassmann GmbH on stand A4-4219, as well as a micro-booth in the 'Plastics in Medical Technology' theme parc.

ELASTO supports the thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) market with a sophisticated and innovative product range developed by highly qualified material experts. The company's products combine the performance of thermoset rubbers with the processing ease of plastics to deliver enhanced design possibilities to a diverse range of markets. Collectively, ELASTO have a history of more than 60 years of successfully customising TPE compounds to meet customers' specifications. The company was one of the first companies in Europe to start producing TPE and today ELASTO partners companies across the globe from our two world class production operations.
