Foamaster 350 - a "green" defoamer for high-performance coatings and adhesives

Monheim -- Oil prices are at record levels, and the upward trend shows no signs of stopping. As a result, many enterprises seek to reduce their dependence on mineral oil not only for fuel, but in other industrial areas as well - yet without sacrificing performance and quality. Cognis therefore strives to offer its customers high-performance products on the basis of natural raw materials. With the mineral-oil free Foamaster® 350 defoamer, Cognis presents a new product that makes manufacturers of varnishes, coatings and adhesives less dependent on mineral oil while enabling outstanding product performance.

Foamaster 350 allows manufacturers to make use of the trend towards sustainability, by enabling them to offer products that match or surpass both the performance and cost-effectiveness of mineral-oil-based competing products. Derived from renewable resources, this new universal liquid defoamer is composed of hydrophobic elements and natural oils. It is completely free of mineral oil and silicone oil and delivers numerous performance features. Foam suppression during polymerization is very quick, overall performance and effectiveness are comparable to those of mineral-oil defoamers, in some cases even superior. For example, in contrast to mineral-oil defoamers, its density remains virtually unchanged even after prolonged storage in extreme conditions. The defoamer is suitable for use in the manufacture of synthetic latex, matt or satin-finished water-based architectural coatings, all kinds of plasters and aqueous adhesives.

Ecologically and economically sound

As the prices of petrochemicals look set to keep rising, the demand for mineral-oil free raw materials is expected to become even stronger. However, cost is only one part of the equation - the coatings market also requires products that offer sustainability and performance. Says Ina Puscasu, Market & Concept Development Manager for Consumer Coatings of Cognis, "Foamaster 350 is the latest addition to our range of mineral-oil free defoamers, which offers our customers a unique combination of benefits: not only are the products environmentally sound, but they also offer an excellent price-performance ratio. Petrochemical raw materials will only get more expensive in the long run, so it is a very good idea for manufacturers to also invest in mineral-oil free technology now and start benefiting from reduced costs, while offering consumers the sustainable coatings that they demand."

Cognis offers a range of highly sophisticated mineral-oil free, sustainable defoamers that meet the industry's performance benchmarks. As well as Foamaster 350, the latest of these include FoamStar® EF 332 and Foamaster® 361. FoamStar EF 332 uses Cognis' new Star-Technology concept. The new technology is based on a hyper-branched polymer molecule with a three-dimensional star-shaped structure, which contains both hydrophilic and hydrophobic elements. It functions as a "second surfactant," interacting with the primary surfactant to destabilize the foam bubbles. As such FoamStar EF 332 offers a real alternative to Tributyl Phosphate. It is particularly useful in applications like concrete, mortar and lime floorings. Foamaster 361 is made of renewable resources and is free from fogging-active substances. It is compatible with most modern aqueous binders and is ideal for improving compatibility and film integrity in dispersible matt coatings.
