Düsseldorf - Düsseldorf/Tosno -- Henkel, the world market leader in industrial adhesives, has been active on the Russian market since the beginning of the 1990s. Initially, customers were supplied with adhesives from plants in Western Europe. However, in order to secure a reliable supply in the long term, which is a considerable logistical challenge in view of the country's sheer size, the Company soon decided to build a production plant locally. A suitable site and efficient infrastructure were found in Tosno, where Henkel was already operating plants for the production of laundry detergents and consumer adhesives.

Annual capacity of several thousand tons

The construction of the adhesives plant coincided precisely with the serious Russian financial crisis of 1997/98, when the country's economic advance was plagued by uncertainty. "However, we consistently pursued the investment project, and this proved to be the right course of action once the crisis had been overcome," reports Jürgen Stärke, Henkel Technologies spokesman in Russia. At the new plant, facilities were created for the production of hotmelt and waterborne adhesives with an annual capacity of several thousand metric tons. "Cooperation within the German-Russian project team went off smoothly, and the transfer of know-how has been successfully accomplished," adds Starke enthusiastically. "The plant today has an outstandingly skilled workforce and meets all the internationally applicable quality standards of Henkel's production sites. The installations are state-of-the-art and satisfy the strictest safety and enviromental requirements."

Big demand for adhesives from the consumer goods industry

By investing in the adhesives plant, Henkel has given itself a decisive strategic edge over the competition. Thanks to the quality and closeness of production combined with the varied range of adhesives and the applicational experience of Henkel's adhesives specialists, the company has quickly evolved into the preferred supplier to the whole of Russian industry. Since the year 2000, just a year after going into operation, Tosno has been working in three shifts. The Russian consumer goods industry in particular is growing at a rapid rate and demand for adhesives is correspondingly high. In big demand are packaging and labeling adhesives for the food, beverage and cosmetics industries as well as special adhesives for the furniture and household appliance sectors. The most important customers for Henkel adhesives also include the graphic arts industry and cigarette manufacturers. "Along with the quality of our products and technical advice, customers are particularly appreciative of our high reliability," says Starke, neatly summing up the key to Henkel's success. "This is a definite competitive advantage and one that companies from all sectors of industry benefit from."

Investment in further growth

Henkel expects the vigorous growth of the industrial adhesives market in Russia to continue. Extra sums are therefore currently being invested in the Tosno adhesives plant so that Henkel can increase its lead as the market and technology leader. The new installations are intended to boost production capacity and further diversify the range of adhesives. Jürgen Starke: "Demand from Russian industry in the coming years will expand into increasingly specialized adhesives applications. By making this investment, we have ensured that our customers will be able to depend on the accustomed product quality and punctual deliveries from Henkel in these areas also."
