INIC Researchers Develop Cyanoacrylate Nanocomposite Adhesives for Dental Applications

Published on 2013-11-21. Author : SpecialChem

TEHRAN (INIC)- Iranian researchers from Tehran Science and Research Branch of Islamic Azad University in association with researchers from Iran Polymer and Petrochemical Research Institute produced cyanoacrylate (CA) containing acrylate polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (APOSS) nanostructures as tusk adhesives.

Some of the problems of cyanoacrylate adhesives, including low mechanical properties and solubility in water, were resolved by using POSS nanostructures. POSS nanostructures improved the properties as networking and strengthening agents.

Dental adhesives are compounds that are placed on the tooth structure before the application of composite during the treatment process. Since the surface of the tooth is wet and cyanoacrylate adhesives make good connection with wet surfaces, it is expected that their application as dental adhesives will open a new path in the production of materials with better properties.

Cyanoacrylate adhesives were used as tusk dental adhesives in this research, and their problems, including low mechanical properties and solubility in water, were resolved by using POSS nanostructures. An adhesive with the ability to be polymerized under light reflection was produced as well.

According to Parastoo Fadayee, a researcher from Tehran Science and Research Branch of Islamic Azad University, the goal of the research was to investigate the properties of cyanoacrylate adhesives containing acrylo-POSS (APOSS) nanostructures as tusk adhesives.

About INIC

Iran has recognized the significance of nanotechnology like other pioneering countries and started its activities in line with development of the technology. In this regard and as first step, a Study Committee for Nanotechnology in Iran began its activities in 2001 and finally Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council (INIC) was established in the country in 2003. The INIC is tasked with determining the general policies for the development of nanotechnology in the country and pursuing the case with implementation of the policies. Iran's success in achieving a proper place among 15 countries which are advanced in nanotechnology and making attempt to promote the position in a bid to develop Iran's economy are the main missions of the INIC. Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council is seeking to pave the ground for activity of the private sector and production of wealth within the society through adopting outlook, providing facilities, creating market and removing the existing problems.
