Iranian Researchers Improve Nanocomposite Resin by Adding Silica Nanoparticles

TEHRAN (INIC) -- Iranian researchers produced a resin with improved mechanical and thermal properties by combining silica nanoparticles and a type of polymeric bed through mini-emulsion polymerization.

The nanocomposite resin was synthesized by researchers at Paint Science and Technology Research Centre of University of Sistan and Balouchestan by using a new method. This resin can be used in industries such as paint, glue, carpet, and so forth.

"In order to produce resins with special characteristics, nanoparticles must be prevented from becoming aggregated," Dr. Maliheh Pishvayee, member of the Scientific Board of Resin Group of Paint Science and Technology Research Centre, told the news service of Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council.

"In this research, we modified the surface of colloid silica nanoparticles with oleic acid in order to optimize the layer structure of the polymer on silica nanoparticles, and also to prevent the formation of a two-phase solution of silica nanoparticles and polymer. Then, we synthesized a polymeric layer on the surface of modified nanoparticles by using the relatively novel and precise process of mini-emulsion polymerization," she added.

Pishvayee also reiterated, "In previous studies, the latex-type synthesized polymer had a low concentration and it was not suitable for industrial applications. But in the present research, we succeeded in synthesizing such materials with a relatively desirable concentration (42%) through appropriate method and formulation."

She explained that her team is currently studying the commercialization of the product, and said, "I predict that we will be able to produce the product at an industrial scale within a year."
