Kraton Polymers Announces Passing of Toxicology Studies

Published on 2008-02-26. Author : SpecialChem

HOUSTON -- Kraton Polymers LLC (Kraton) announced it has taken a major step towards the commercialization of the MD6945 SEBS block co-polymer by successfully passing a full range of toxicology studies. These toxicology studies were completed by an FDA recognized independent laboratory using the testing requirements under the new international ISO standards, which is a much more severe testing battery than the traditional USP Class VI biological reactivity tests. MD6945, which is produced under FDA Good Manufacturing Practices, has also passed USP Physicochemical, Cytotoxicity, and Hemolysis (blood compatibility) testing.

"At Kraton Polymers, we understand the complexity and challenges of bringing new packaging and medical devices to the marketplace." says Michael Oberkirch, VP of Packaging and Films for Kraton Polymers. "Having now completed this very rigid testing protocol, we have taken the next step toward full commercialization and are confident our new polymer meets the most stringent requirements for medical applications and is ready for use in our customers' latest innovations."

MD6945 can be used in a variety of medical applications, including films for ostomy bags, medical drapery, intravenous bags and drug delivery systems, as well as other extruded products such as tubing for IV sets, respiratory therapy, and enteral feeding kits. In addition, this product is cleared by FDA for use in direct food contact applications without any conditions of use or food type restrictions.

MD6945 offers easy processability in blown and cast films while maintaining a high degree of puncture resistance, impact, flexibility, and clarity required in many medical and packaging applications. The polymer is the softest pure SEBS block co-polymer produced by Kraton with a Shore A hardness of approximately 35. The polymer comes as a free flowing dense pellet and can easily be blended or coextruded with polyolefins.

About Kraton

Kraton is a leading global engineered polymer company and, we believe, the worlds largest producer of styrenic block copolymers (SBCs), a family of products whose chemistry was pioneered by us over forty years ago. SBCs are highly-engineered thermoplastic elastomers, which enhance the performance of numerous products by delivering a variety of attributes, including greater flexibility, resilience, strength, durability and processability. Kraton polymers are used in a wide range of applications including adhesives, coatings, consumer and personal care products, sealants, lubricants, medical, packaging, automotive, paving, roofing, and footwear products. Kraton has the leading position in nearly all of its core markets and is the only producer of SBCs with global manufacturing capability. Its production facilities are located in the United States, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Brazil, and Japan.
