Bridgewater, NJ -- In a move that brings customers expanded solutions for premium labels, National Adhesives has joined with Henkel Corporation.

"This acquisition of National Adhesives by Henkel brings label manufacturers a comprehensive portfolio of systems solutions," said Ingrid Brase, Market Segment Manager, Pressure Sensitive Adhesives at Henkel. "Our customers continue to benefit from the strength of National's established adhesive brands and gain the added advantage of more products and new capabilities."

Since it introduced the DURO-TAK® brand 50 years ago, National led the way in label applications with innovative products, applications expertise and follow-up service. "Those strengths will continue to be mainstays under our new Henkel identity as our customers gain additional products and expertise that help grow their businesses," said Brase

Top Coats Bring New Opportunities

Customers now have access to top coats, which open new opportunities with great potential, according to Brase. "The label is no longer just a source of information, but has evolved into an important communicator of brand image," she explained. "Henkel coatings offerings provide an enhanced finished appearance, which allows producers to be more creative and to differentiate their products cost-effectively."

For production of premium labels, Henkel offers the full spectrum of modern adhesives and coating technologies. The comprehensive portfolio includes not only adhesives that keep the label firmly in place even in difficult conditions, but also innovative UV coatings and special effect varnishes for enhancing quality labels during the printing process. Close cooperation with leading manufacturers of substrates and siliconized papers and of machines and application equipment positions Henkel as a strong single-source supplier.

The new Henkel team offers many advantages to the industry, especially for hotmelt coaters and label printers who want to inline-coat their pressure-sensitive laminate with adhesive. By partnering with Henkel, even small and medium-size firms can coat their labelstock materials themselves, without having to compromise on quality. And Henkel's comprehensive product range is backed by outstanding technical support, optimal tools for process control and the right products for maintenance and cleaning.

On Deck at Label Expo, Booth #853:

For sophisticated industrial applications and for labeling high-quality consumer goods, Henkel adds value throughout the supply chain. The company's portfolio of specialties spans all kinds of label constructions - including removable, repositionable or permanent - and meets the highest standards of heat and chemical resistance, chill/deep-freeze application, and "no-label" appearance.

At Label Expo, Henkel is presenting an extensive range of innovative hotmelts for pressure-sensitive labels:
  • Premium hotmelts for wine and beverage, with a "no-label" look: For extremely demanding applications in bottle labeling, Henkel offers Technomelt® EM 799 and DURO-TAK 34-659B, which handle difficult tasks such as dispensing onto moist and cool surfaces. They offer good adhesive performance on tight radii (Mandrel performance) and show extremely good resistance in hypercondensation and ice-water tests. The hotmelts diecut easily, even at high speeds, and can be used for barrel labels that must withstand seawater exposure. Both of these hotmelts are also suitable for clear applications, such as those requiring "no-label" look.
  • Innovative hotmelt for direct food contact: Technomelt 86-7127 has been developed especially for the labeling of greasy and moist foods. Thanks to its outstanding adhesive characteristics, it is particularly suitable for labeling on extremely challenging surfaces, such as meat or cheese. This hotmelt is highly transparent and also ideal for applications on fruit.
  • Squeezable hotmelt for cosmetics labels: Technomelt EM 8\707 is formulated for squeezable labels on PE or PP containers - shampoos and shower gels, for example - which must remain wrinkle-free even after repeated stressing. As a film, it is highly transparent and is characterized by high heat stability, excellent dimensional stability and outstanding die-cutability. It is also suitable for challenging industrial applications, such as labeling of hot-filled oil canisters or chemical drums (with seawater resistance to BS 5609)
  • Removable and repositionable hotmelt: Technomelt HM 6410 is a low peel pressure-sensitive hotmelt adhesive for removable applications on a large variety of substrates. It also provides an excellent solution for specialty applications on polar containers (glass bottles, PTC containers), where repositionable features are required.
  • Dairy label hotmelt: Technomelt EM774 is suitable for labeling milk jugs. Ideal for both paper and film facestocks, it withstands the stress of filling and survives low temperatures.
  • Innovative hotmelt for reclosable applications: Technomelt 86-7135 is a classic hotmelt for the fast-growing wet wipe package market. It has good initial tack and is also suitable for highly transparent, no-label-look applications. Technomelt 86-7135 is distinguished by low-noise opening and outstanding reclosure performance on many substrates. As a result, it is a unique alternative for many tasks that until now have only been possible with solvent- or UV-based adhesives. Due to its outstanding repositionable characteristics, Technomelt 86-7135 may also be used for peel and reseal labels, as well as for other removable applications in the premium food market.

Special effects with UV coatings: Multilayer labels and more

Henkel also offers label printers special Miracure® UV coatings that give premium labels special design effects and protection. "Mboss" effects can replace mechanical embossing, even in applications where conventional embossing is impossible. Film effect coatings represent a special alternative to conventional hot and cold stamping. UV overprint coatings decorate and extend the service life of any printed label.

Miracure L9091 V is special UV-based technology that can be processed in classic flexo printing. It is distinguished by curing without the need of costly nitrogen inertization equipment for processing.
