DÜSSELDORF – PolyOne GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers, a global leader in high-performance, custom-formulated thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), has introduced OnFlex™ S High Temperature TPEs at K 2010. This breakthrough technology enables customers to create high-performance seals with all of the advantages that TPEs have over traditional materials.

"These new grades have been developed in response to customer demand, and are a prime example of PolyOne's customer-centric approach," said Rick Noller, director of global marketing, PolyOne GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers. "OnFlex S High Temperature TPEs can help customers improve the value and performance of their products through superior sealing performance, better operational efficiency and recyclability."

Increasing demand for sustainable materials has led some companies to seek a substitute for thermoset rubber to achieve recyclability while maintaining mechanical performance and ease of processing - exactly what the new OnFlex S High Temperature grades deliver.

OnFlex S High Temperature TPEs combine outstanding mechanical performance with enhanced design freedom and aesthetics. They are formulated to meet the demands of high-performance seals found in appliances, packaging, automotive and pipe applications - particularly in high-temperature environments. They can be extruded, injection molded, co-molded or co-extruded to avoid assembly and enable part consolidation.

A recent application using OnFlex S High Temperature illustrates these benefits. The material was chosen by Mexico's Vacman Internacional SA de CV to replace neoprene rubber in five seals and gaskets used in a wet vacuum. The company sought improved tensile strength and equivalent compression set versus rubber, together with the ability to process the parts on its thermoplastic molding equipment to streamline manufacturing. Only OnFlex S High Temperature was able to meet all of the requirements. It also enables recycling of scrap and end-of-life parts to support Vacman's environmental goals.

Further, these new TPEs provide enhanced stress relaxation for long-term sealing performance, as well as superior tensile strength, tear strength and elongation compared to TPVs. Unlike basic black thermoset rubber, OnFlex S High Temperature TPEs avoid time-consuming vulcanization and secondary assembly, and provide excellent colorability for increased design freedom. The materials can be supplied pre-colored or can be colored with polypropylene-based masterbatches.
