The project, coordinated by the Valencian Company IMECAL, has been funded by Bio-Based Industries’ JTI within the EU research and innovation program H2020 under grant agreement No 745828. With a budget of EUR 3.4 million and three years of duration, the partners of PERCAL have the objective of developing chemical intermediates of high industrial interest such as bioethanol, lactic acid or succinic acid.

Basis of Solvents

The project’s distinctive feature lies in the source where they would be obtained, which is the organic fraction of the municipal solid wastes, as well as the high performance and purity that is expected to obtain. These products will serve as the basis for the manufacturing of sustainable solvents (ethyl lactate), hot melt adhesives, polyester bio-polyols for producing polyurethane, as well as for biosurfactants from the residual fatty and proteic fractions.

In the international consortium of PERCAL, 12 organizations take part: IMECAL, AIMPLAS and CENER (Spain), Agricultural University of Athens (Greece), ATB Potsdam and Covestro (Germany), Ghent University (Belgium), TBW Research (Austria), VISUM (Ireland), SOFTER Group (Italy), Hayat Kimya (Turkey) and Exergy (United Kingdom).
