Sartomer Launches New Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) Resin

Published on 2005-03-16. Author : SpecialChem

EXTON, Pa.-- Global specialty chemicals manufacturer Sartomer Company introduces the first commercially available thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) resin based on unique polybutadiene polyols.

This new resin, Poly bd® 2035 TPU, is designed to enhance the performance of films, adhesives, sealants, coatings, and thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) when compared to conventional TPUs based on polyether or polyester polyols. Poly bd 2035 is also an excellent candidate for polymer modification of traditional polyolefin and engineering polymers for enhanced properties.

Poly bd 2035 TPU is an 80 Shore A material with a specific gravity of 0.96. The new resin offers a number of performance properties, including excellent resistance against strong acids and bases, as well as resistance to hydrolysis. Tests have demonstrated that Poly bd 2035 is almost unaffected by immersion in strong solutions such as 60% H2SO4, 40% HNO3, or 50% NaOH for 28 days at ambient temperature. The resin also serves as a barrier for oxygen and water vapor permeation.

In addition, Poly bd 2035 TPU offers superior electrical properties when compared to conventional TPU products, opening up new product and market opportunities. For example, its volume resistivity is 1 x 1014 .m and its surface resistivity is1.5 X 1016 ..

"Now, compounders can expand the applications for existing polymers by using this TPU to improve performance," said William F. Wittig, business manager, specialty polymers for Sartomer Company. "And, we plan to develop TPUs with a range of hardness based on the Poly bd resin product family in 2005, further expanding the application possibilities."

Sartomer Company, part of TOTAL's Chemicals branch, is a U.S.-based manufacturer of specialty chemicals.
