SCG-Dow Group’s New Specialty Elastomers Plant in Thailand On Track for Startup in Early 2011

Horgen, Switzerland -- SCG-Dow Group, a joint venture of The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) and Siam Cement Group (SCG) announced construction on a new world scale specialty elastomers plant in the Asia Industrial Estate in Rayong Province, Thailand, is on track and operations are expected to commence in early 2011.

"Despite the plunge in chemical demand triggered by the worldwide economic downturn and the very challenging economic environment, Dow remains focused on its strategy to invest in its downstream performance businesses and to drive growth in Asia Pacific," said Heinz Haller, executive vice president, Dow Performance Products & Systems. "Dow is laying the foundations for its elastomers business in the global marketplace and aims to use its investment in Thailand as a springboard to expand its presence in Asia".

The specialty elastomers train is based on metallocene technology and will currently be the biggest plant to serve the Asian regions, and supplement Dow's European and North American assets. This new facility will supply Dow's customers with some of the most technologically advanced plastomers and elastomers in the world, including AFFINITY™ Polyolefin Plastomers and ENGAGE™ Polyolefin Elastomers. "Once completed, the plant can supply products to the global market and may possibly provide products only to the Asian market in the future when Asia Pacific demand is fully developed", added Haller.

AFFINITY™ Polyolefin Plastomers are versatile polymers that offer excellent adhesion at high and low temperatures, excellent processability, and high levels of performance in packaging and other applications. ENGAGE™ Polyolefin Elastomers offer an exceptional combination of flexibility and toughness, making them a material of choice for a wide variety of applications, including automotive thermoplastic applications.

Dow's R&D activities in Asia recently ramped up with a new R&D center in Shanghai, which began operation in February 2009. This further investment exemplifies Dow's commitment to the region and to driving product innovation for its customers globally. With a footprint of 65,000 square meters, the facility is Asia's first total R&D center (including fundamental research) and employs 1,500 people.
