Presented in collaboration with Center for Automotive Research (CAR), the Altair Enlighten Award recognizes achievement in weight reduction across the automotive industry from motorcycles to passenger cars, light trucks to commercial vehicles and buses.

This year, Sika Automotive’s Ultra-High Modulus Adhesive (UHM) for Mixed Material Bonding has been nominated along with 17 other breakthrough lightweighting technologies. The innovative adhesive, part of the Sikaflex® automotive product family, a high modulus, fast cure adhesive material is currently used to bond the CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) Life Module to the aluminum chassis Drive Module on the BMW i3 and i8. The innovative adhesive is ideally suited to support the industry with a solution for the growing demand in mixed material bonding.

Its structural bonding performance must balance with the different thermal expansion of dissimilar materials, the “delta-alpha” effect. Further, the Sikaflex® UHM is based on Sika’s innovative and patented i-Cure® technology, which ensures accelerated curing without changing the product's mechanical properties, while also reducing the carbon footprint in vehicle manufacturing. The innovation allows BMW to radically change the way the i-series vehicles are manufactured, away from conventional technique to a cold body shop, and eliminates the complexity of traditional body shop welding. “The automotive industry has fundamentally been transformed in recent years as automakers achieved revolutionary changes in vehicle designs with dramatic weight reduction.

Sika Automotive is proud to have been a partner to many of our OEM customers in helping them to achieve the vehicle lightweighting. We are thrilled that the Altair Enlighten Award committee has recognized our contribution to the BMW i3 and i8, the Sikaflex® Ultra-High Modulus Adhesive. It was specifically engineered to enable our customers to have maximum flexibility in designing and manufacturing vehicles which require bonding of mixed material such as CFRP, aluminum and steel. “, said Sika Automotive’s Vice President Greg Moran, Head of Global Automotive Marketing. The winner of the Altair Enlighten Award is determined by an independent panel of judges and will be announced during the 50th Annual CAR Management Briefing Seminar, taking place in Traverse City, Michigan from August 3 to 6, 2015.
