Solutia Appoints Celanese as New Marketing Partner for Ethyl Acetate

Published on 2008-12-16. Author : SpecialChem

ST. LOUIS -- Solutia Inc. is announcing the appointment of Celanese Corp. as its new marketing partner for the company's ethyl acetate product for the Americas. As of January 1, 2009, the agreement allows Celanese to distribute ethyl acetate from Solutia's sites in Springfield, Mass., and Trenton, Mich., in order to supplement its own production and sales in the Americas region. The combined ethyl acetate capacity from Solutia's two production sites is approximately 22,000 metric tons annually. Solutia's current marketing partner, BP Amoco Chemical Company, has said it will continue to honor current supply contracts and agreements until December 31, 2008.

"Ensuring the on-going supply of product to customers is our primary focus during this transition," said Wing Kwang, global business director, Automotive and Specialty Additives, Solutia. "Present customers of Solutia's ethyl acetate will be notified of their new regional Celanese sales contact so that new contracts or agreements can be developed to ensure uninterrupted supply after the transition is completed."

"We are pleased to be the new ethyl acetate marketing partner for Solutia, and see this agreement as a way to ensure a continuous supply of quality product to our customer base," said John Caamano, global business manager, Solvents, Celanese.

"We have valued our partnership with BP over the last 9 years. As they transition out of the ethyl acetate business, we look forward to working with Celanese," added Kwang.

Ethyl acetate is used as a solvent in oil-based lacquers and enamels (especially in polyurethane finishes) and in inks and adhesives. The main uses of ethyl acetate are in the manufacture of nitrocellulose and cellulose acetate lacquers and as a solvent component in adhesives and in spread-coating compounds for artificial leather. It is also used as a solvent in many chemical processes.
