Solvay Successfully Completes First Phase of REACH Registration

Published on 2010-12-06. Author : SpecialChem

Solvay announces it has successfully registered 170 dossiers, representing 82 different chemical substances, at the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), a few days ahead of the deadline of the first REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) registration phase. Solvay was lead registrant for 39 dossiers.

According to REACH Regulation, manufacturers and importers of chemicals had to submit to ECHA before December 1st a registration dossier for each substance manufactured or imported in quantities of 1000 tons or more per year as well as substances classified as dangerous for the aquatic environment (R50/53 classification) above 100 tons per year and substances classified as Carcinogenic, Mutagenic or Toxic for Reproduction (CMR category 1 and 2) above 1 ton per year.

"Finalizing all the duties in time was a tremendous challenge for the large team of about 35 people mobilized within the Group", says Christine Defourny, Solvay's REACH project Manager. The task was even more demanding when Solvay had a role as lead registrant and therefore had to integrate the contribution of all involved participants gathered in the Substance Information Exchange Fora (SIEF). In addition, the SIEF mechanism for preparing jointly the registration dossiers required an extensive communication up and down the supply chain.

The REACH objectives are in line with Solvay commitments to sustainable development. These objectives aim to promote the safe use of the registered substances and to increase the level of protection of human health and the environment.

This successful registration paves the way for the further REACH duties. In the coming weeks and months, Solvay will continue its interactions with all of its external and internal partners, including ECHA, the national authorities, the supply chain, the SIEF, consortia, consultants...

In addition, Solvay is also implementing the new European Regulation on Classification, Labeling and Packaging (CLP), including the CLP notification to ECHA by end 2010 and preparation of the corresponding hazard communication documents for the supply chain.
