Texas Petrochemicals LP Announces Expansion of Polyisobutylene Unit

Published on 2005-08-18. Author : SpecialChem

HOUSTON -- Texas Petrochemicals LP (TPC), a Houston-based petrochemical company specializing in C4 hydrocarbons, announced the completion of a major expansion to their existing polyisobutylene (PIB) unit in Houston, Texas.

TPC first entered the PIB market in May 2000 with the startup of its patented process to produce a wide range of PIB products. Since that time, the company has nearly doubled its capacity through multiple expansion projects.

"This accomplishment supports one of the company's primary objectives to increase its market share in both the additive and industrial markets," said Sandra Davis, vice president, specialty polymers and new business development. "TPC is one of only two merchant manufacturers of PIB in North American and the only merchant marketer of highly reactive PIB (HRPIB), for which its application in lube and fuel additives continues to be in strong demand."

Plans for another expansion project currently underway is expected to further increase capacity of the existing PIB unit by another 50 percent by mid-2006.

The TPC Houston plant manufactures a full range of high-quality polyisobutylene products ranging in molecular weights from 350 to 3500, which service all the major markets ranging from caulks & sealants to lip gloss. TPC is a direct marketer of PIB but also uses national break-bulk distributors. TPC also has an extensive line of highly reactive polyisobutylene products ranging in molecular weights from 350 to 2300, which are especially designed for use as dispersants for lube and fuel additive applications.

The company is a producer of quality C4 chemical products widely used as chemical building blocks for synthetic rubber, nylon carpets, adhesives, catalysts and additives used in highperformance polymers. The company has manufacturing facilities in the industrial corridor adjacent to the Houston Ship Channel and operates product terminals in Baytown, Texas and Lake Charles, Louisiana.
