Plaxica is pleased to announce that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued US Patents 9,045,781, 9,045,782 and 9,045,783. The patents cover key aspects of Plaxica’s Optipure® technology, a robust, scalable chemical process which separates racemic lactic acid into valuable pure L & D isomer streams which are suitable for processing into high performance polylactic acid (PLA).

“These patents are an important part of Plaxica’s Optipure® license package and protect the key Optipure® technology”, said Philip Goodier, CEO of Plaxica. “Additionally, the grant of these rights demonstrates how Plaxica’s intellectual property portfolio is maturing to cover Plaxica’s technologies in the major international markets”.

About Plaxica

Plaxica is a technology licensing company founded in 2008 as a spin-out from Imperial College, London. Our unique technology allows partners to transform low value by-product streams into high value lactic acid and derivatives of lactic acid such as polylactic acid and propylene glycol. Our process often has significant synergies with the operations of the feedstock supplier which can further improve the project’s financial case. Impurities in the feedstock, including acetic acid and lignin, are isolated and can be sold. Plaxica’s lower cost lactic acid can be used to reduce the cost base of existing applications for lactic acid, and also allows entry in new markets where fermentation-based lactic acid has proved too costly.
