WACKER Presents Innovative Binders for High Performing Wood Adhesives Solutions at FIMMA Brasil

Munich/Sao Paulo -- At the 10. International Fair of Machines, Raw Materials and Accessories for the Furniture Industry (FIMMA Brasil), WACKER will showcase innovative polymer dispersions for high performing wood adhesives: VINNAPAS® EP 1400 is a vinyl acetate/ethylene-based (VAE) copolymer dispersion ideal for formulating cost-competitive adhesives, for instance for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) lamination, veneering and membrane pressing. Further emphasis will be on VINNAPAS® DPX 271, a low formaldehyde, non discolouring PVAc (polyvinyl acetate) homopolymer binder for wood and furniture adhesives suppressing the need of external crosslinkers. These products further advance WACKER's leading position in the field of dispersions for adhesives. FIMMA Brasil 2011 takes place from March 21 to 25 in Bento Gonçalves, Brazil.

One of WACKER's highlights at FIMMA Brasil, the largest trade fair in Latin America for the wood and furniture production chain, is VINNAPAS® EP 1400: An aqueous dispersion based on vinyl acetate and ethylene as cost-competitive VAE copolymer binder for PVC lamination, veneering and membrane pressing.

As the ethylene serves as internal plasticizer, VINNAPAS® EP 1400 can be used for wet lamination without adding additional plasticizing components. Further, and in contrast to polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) homopolymers with external plasticizers, it demonstrates excellent adhesion on unpolar surfaces such as PVC.

For membrane pressing application, VINNAPAS® EP 1400 is recommended alone or in combination with polyurethane (PU) dispersions and isocyanate crosslinkers. The VAE copolymer binder shows excellent crosslinker response with isocyanates. By lowering the amount of PU dispersions needed in the formulation, overall costs can be reduced by up to 30 percent without losing performance properties. Furthermore, the improvement of the initial strength in combination with PU dispersions enables the reduction of process and energy costs thanks to quicker pressing time.

VINNAPAS® EP 1400 demonstrates good adhesion and cohesion, a good wet tack and improved water resistance. With a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 0°C, it also shows fast film formation, high setting speed, good machine processability and excellent mechanical properties. Using the VAE technology further allows for a higher manufacturing productivity, as fewer additional additives such as plasticizers are necessary and formulations thus can be simplified.

Furthermore, VINNAPAS® EP 1400 is produced without using alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO), has a low formaldehyde content (<10 ppm) and makes it possible to formulate adhesives with a low content of volatile organic compounds (VOC).

The dispersion allows manufacturers of adhesives to lower their final solids without compromising performance properties. Due to its univeral profile, VINNAPAS® EP 1400 is ideally suited for applications in the wood and furniture segment, for instance for PVC laminating, as well as for paper and packaging formulations.

Exceptional Wood Glue Free of External Crosslinkers

WACKER further showcases on FIMMA Brasil VINNAPAS® DPX 271, a dispersion offering extraordinary bonding properties for wood applications while dispensing with an external crosslinker. Traditionally, water resistance in wood adhesives is obtained by cross linking, e.g. with isocyanates in two-component systems, or with an internal cross linker which needs acid catalyst. Disadvantages of such systems are for instance the fault-prone handling of two-component formulations, wood discoloration from the catalyst or formaldehyde emissions from certain cross linking technologies.

With the VINNAPAS® DPX line, WACKER has developed a technology for high water resistance in wood adhesives. The patented VINNAPAS® DPX 271, featuring water resistance category D3, can dispense with a reactive co-monomer. Thus, discoloration can be avoided even on sensitive wood types. The dispersion is also highly tolerant to fillers, such as calcium carbonate, while maintaining its water resistance and improving its thermal stability, achieving an excellent cost-benefit ratio.
